Grand Prix of Belarus in Programming

On October 1, a Grand Prix in team programming among students of leading Belarusian higher educational institutions was held in Minsk. Such large–scale tournament was conducted in Belarus for the first time.

The event was organized by the Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Informatics of the Belarusian State University and sponsored by the local software company Itransition.

The distinctive feature of the event was that unlike at the World Championship, the teams are not obliged to be present at the venue, therefore participants from Russia, Kazakhstan, Georgia and Armenia were partaking remotely through Internet. Among 192 teams that participated in the event, 30 teams were Belarusian representing around 20 higher educational institutions.

Vladimir Kotov, Head of the Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Informatics of the Belarusian State University, coaches the university team for the 30th World Championship in programming that will take place in April 2006 in the USA. According to Mr. Kotov, ”the Belarusian Grand Prix is a preliminary contest that will serve as preparation for the World Championship. We will support such initiatives of the Belarusian University as the CIS Cup with the greatest pleasure.”
